Micropoetry

Listen

Khalid Mukhtar · September 24, 2020 · Leave a Comment

Hear the sound of His love
In the simplest of things
The swish of a broom
Or the flutter of wings

Rumor Has It

Khalid Mukhtar · September 19, 2020 · Leave a Comment

The only right that rumors hold
Is one to die before they’re told

How can we scape their vengeance if
They don’t forget who let them live

Noah Knows

Khalid Mukhtar · September 12, 2020 · Leave a Comment

Who knows what centuries of life
And living and learning can do for you

Nūh knew
‘AlayhisSalaam

Who knows how to keep the world afloat
By the weight of wahy that sinks in true

Nūh knew
‘AlayhisSalaam

Who knows the power of patience in
The face of unabating sin

If you turn your back on a prophet know
That Nūr can turn its back on you

It’s true
Submit and stay calm

Tired

Khalid Mukhtar · September 5, 2020 · Leave a Comment

You’re tired and spent
You’re gone though you never went
This bed of gold
Won’t turn back into straw

So take a hard look
Not everything’s in a book
Your heart may find
A door you never saw

Grave Matters

Khalid Mukhtar · September 1, 2020 · Leave a Comment

If it seems like the struggle’s over
And it all feels right and good
You had better be dead
Or mistaken – the latter
Needs fixing before
It becomes a grave matter

Breakwater

Khalid Mukhtar · August 29, 2020 · Leave a Comment

When the sea gets rough
And the swell takes toll
As the winds wage battle
Against your soul
Faith is your breakwater

The stronger the walls
And the firmer they stand
The safer the passage
Returns you to land
‘Fore the decks take water

Rowing

Khalid Mukhtar · August 24, 2020 · Leave a Comment

You need your whole body to row
Not just your hands but much more
‘Fit’s all the way you want to go
Then go be one with the oar

Not So Random

Khalid Mukhtar · August 22, 2020 · Leave a Comment

The words that I say
The plans that I make
The hands that I play
And the roads that I take

Like leaves in the breeze
That fall from the trees
You reckon they float
To wherever they please

But the random escapes
Every pattern to be
Like a whale on a mission
Deep down in the sea

Scent

Khalid Mukhtar · July 25, 2020 · Leave a Comment

We may be parted
But let’s hang in there
Throw a shirt on my face
Dry away the despair

I’ll meet you again
Just a question of when
In the shallows of space
Or the depths of a prayer

Any peace that you feel
All the peace that you want
Is in ṣabrun jameel
And a scent in the air

Fishing

Khalid Mukhtar · July 11, 2020 · Leave a Comment

I spend hours thinking
To make me feel smart
Then render my thoughts
Into words, call it art
To exchange it for fame
There’s no shallower game
Than a catch from the deeps
Of my heart

Cure with salt to keep it from rotting
