Micropoetry

Four

Khalid Mukhtar · June 1, 2022 · Leave a Comment

One cube four corners
Four imams and their ways
Four pillars that point us
To the fifth in these days

And rogue wayfarers:
We’re welcome always

Intelligentsia

Khalid Mukhtar · May 31, 2022 · Leave a Comment

Abu Jahl: proof
That ignorance can be the share
Of the intelligentsia

Now there’s a sign
To go with that cheese and wine

Stir It In

Khalid Mukhtar · May 31, 2022 · Leave a Comment

Listening requires you
To ponder every word

You don’t add sugar to your tea
And leave it there unstirred

Think on what you heard

Dry Weather

Khalid Mukhtar · May 30, 2022 · Leave a Comment

In unstable and extremely dry weather
Choose your words with every care
They may start a fire when struck together
So please pay attention to the air

Numb

Khalid Mukhtar · May 30, 2022 · Leave a Comment

You know He sees it all
When you can’t shake that feeling
The very one you feel
When you aren’t numb to pain

True Love

Khalid Mukhtar · May 30, 2022 · Leave a Comment

If you taint your heart
With the slightest disdain
For the sacrifice of Ibrahīm

Then you will not see
How true love can be
When the secrets of every dream

Come alive with the slaughter of time

Small Print

The promise of sin: touch now, burn later
The promise of sincere repentance is greater

Intense

Khalid Mukhtar · May 26, 2022 · Leave a Comment

Put everything that’s on your mind
All the world and just everything in it
Every todo that you’ve been assigned
Be it massive or won’t-take-a-minute

All your fears and all your desires
Your ambitions and all of the fun
Everything that your person requires
Every poem and song every pun

Put them all on the back of your hands
And now khalid get ready to stand
Raise them up see they don’t make a sound
When they slide away onto the ground

Silent submission till the Salaam
Then you pick up the pieces and calmly
Get on with it

Calling Out

Khalid Mukhtar · May 25, 2022 · Leave a Comment

My Lord you know what’s in my heart
‎But teach me not to shy
‎Away from bringing to my tongue
‎A supplicating cry

‎For sea was split and ark was built
‎And petition declared
‎From darknesses where ordinary
‎Souls would have despaired

‎لَآ اِلٰهَ اِلَّآ اَنت

Sweet and Sour

It doesn’t really matter
Just where your tears go
Streaming down your face
Onto the prayer rug
Into your trusted palm So long
As sweet remembrance is your drug
That turns your salty grief
Into saccharine relief
It doesn’t really matter
